The main conflict in Slum dog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle is between Jamal and Prem Kumar, the game show host of who wants to be a millionaire. Throughout the film, Prem works against Jamal, trying to stop Jamal from winning the 25 million rupee prize. Prem feeds Jamal the wrong answer and he even gets police men to interrogate and torture Jamal. Jamal however, only wants to win to find the girl he’s known since he was a child and is now in love with Latika and has little interest in being rich.

The conflict between Jamal and Prem is highlighted by the cinematography used by the director. There are many different examples of cinematography in the opening sequence used to show the conflict. The director Danny Boyle uses a mid-shot to help establish the relationship with between Jamal and Prem. An example of the mid shots used is when Jamal and Prem are sitting opposite each other they are shown as equals at that moment. Another example is near the start of the film and is a bird’s eye view shot of the studio. This shows how the conflict in the studio compares to a boxing ring or a gladiator arena, and gives the impression that Jamal and Prem are fighting.

Another technique used by Danny Boyle to show the conflict between Prem and Jamal is the acting style and dialog. Jamal is very determined and content throughout the film this is shown by the way he talks to Prem and by Jamal not reacting to Prem calling him a chiawallh and a slum dog. At first you can see the nervousness of Jamal through the way he hesitated at first answering the questions Prem asked. Prem right from the beginning of the film is acting superior and up himself when he makes fun of Jamal because he is an uneducated slum dog that works as an assistant to a phone basher, Prem begins to appear nervous   as the film progresses and it becomes apparent that Jamal could win the grand prize.  The attributes of both actors helps you to understand the conflict between Jamal and Prem.

The sound track was another of the techniques the director used to help show the conflict between Jamal and Prem. In the first scene the constant tick tock builds up the tension. This is used to help show the tension between Jamal and Prem right from the start of the film. Then the tension is broken with the theme music to who wants to be a millionaire. But then are attention is drawn to the conflict between Jamal and Prem. This is how the conflict helped me understand the conflict.

The conflict between Jamal and Prem helped me understand the main idea that love will overcome all. The conflict shows the audience that Jamal has to overcome his poverty and slum dog origin. It does this when Prem asks questions that trigger flash backs to his past life in the slums the flash backs are also triggered by the police interrogation and beating order by Prem.

The conflict also helped me understand Jamal’s love for Latika. When you hear Jamal say “it’s not about the money “and “I knew you’d be watching” helped me understand that Jamal loved Latika more than he wanted the money or to be rich and that he only went on the show to find Latika. Jamal’s conflict with Prem really helps you to realise that as long as Jamal finds Latika everything would turn out alright.
